BAND CONTEST.

OPENED AT DUNEDIN. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, March 1. The band contest began to-day. Withdrawals from the B grades are: Maori Hhll. Fifth Regiment, Wellington ; Eighth Regiment, South Canterbury ; Coast Defence; Eighth Regiment Southland; Appleton, and Whangarei. Withdrawals from the A grade are Queen Alexandra Second, Wanganui; Eighth Regiment, Southland; and Napier City. E-flat solo result.—R. E. Olney (Hawke’s Bay), 98 points, 1; J. Baxter (Invercargill Hibernian) 97 points, 2. A protest was entered against Olney on the-ground that ho used an 1 EE-flat instead of an E-flat. Bass Solo (own selection). —W. Fenton (Woolston) 1, T. Williams (St. Hilda) 2, H. Hughes (12th Nelson and Marlborough regimental bands) and A. Guthrie (Wanganui Garrison) tied, third. Trombone 'Trio.—2nd South Canterbury Regiment 1, 12th Nelson and Marlborough Regimental 2, Woolston Band 3. > f * TO-DAY’S RESULTS. DUNEDIN, March 2.
