MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

COASTAL RESIDENTS ARRESTED. SERIES OE THEFTS ALLEGED. Suspicion, aroused by many complaints of thieving led to a raid being made on Monday on the premise® of Magon Brothers, Newall Road, Warea, by Constable O'Neill (Rahotu), Constable Clouston (Opunake), and some civilian assistants. As a result Frederick Magon and Charles Magon were arrested and appeared in the Magistrate’s Court at New Plymouth this morning. Messrs. F. C. J. Bellringer and H. R. Cattley, J.P.’s, were on the Bench.

The accused were charged with having committed thefts as follows: On June 27, 1919, at Okato, Swaudn overcoat (value £4) the property of Ralph Cassie, AVarea; on November 9, at Pungarehu, set of tea cups (£4 los), breeching (£2), rubber piping (8s), the property of Emmanuel Disfc, of Pungarehu; on August 23, at AAhuea, oilskin overcoat (£3), the property of Peter Hcalion; on October 21, at Okato, saddle and bridle (£4 10s) the property of George Benton; in the month of December, at Puniho, horsecollar (£4), the property of C. S. Fox. Sub-Inspector Hutton applied for a remand to next Monday and said a further remand would probably be applied for. The police had not yet had time to go into matters, and according to information he had received there was still a cartload of stuff to he overhauled. The remand was granted, and MY. It, H. Quilliam, who appeared fbr accused, applied for hail. The Sub-Inspector said that if the accused were bailed out the police would bo hampered in discovering the ownership of tho property found in tlieir possession. He opposed bail being granted, at any rate, until next Monday. Mr. Quilliam contended The accused were entitled to bail as a right under tho Justices of the Peace Act, because non© of the charges involved a maximum penalty of more than two years’ imprisonment. The Justices refused hail on the ground of tho number of charges and the period over which they extended.

BURGLARY AND FIR^. OCCURRENCES IN TOWNA similar remand to that in the foregoing cases was made in connection with a young man who was charged with'the following offences: Between December 22 and January 2, breaking and entering a house in Buller Street occupied by Russell H. Bartley and stealing a magazine a gold seal ring, a lady’s bracelet, two gold brooches and a lady’s gold watcli, of a total value of £4O; wilfully setting fire to this house; attempting by day to break and enter the dwelling-house" of Patrick J. Flannagan with intent to commit a crime. It is believed that the police have secured the person responsible for quite a number of’ small burglaries which they have been investigating for some time past, and it is understood that further charges will be prepared against tho accused. He was arrested on Monday by Constable Wroblenski.
