WAITARA.

■BOM OUU OWN COl’.nnaPONDtN't. Fob. 27.—The weather disappointed ail hope of a successful picnic on the beach yesterday, and it had to be abandoned. The Tabor Shield was competed for, however, as the tide would not have served had it been postponed for a w'eek. Tho result was that the Waitara team which has held the trophy for two. years had to yield it to New Plymouth East End team, and had to take third place, New Plymouth Head Centro being second. All hon. our to the winners, and Waitara will try to bring the trophy hack again some day. The object of the picnic was to raise funds for tho Seaside Society’s tea kiosk, but the abandonment must entail a heavy loss instead of profit, besides the disappointment to the workers. Townspeople should see to it that, at any rate, the funds of the society arc not depleted. What about a “whip round” to pay expenses? It is rumoured that an occasional tin of benzine was spirited away from the garage of a private motor owner not many miles from Waitara, and the owner decided on a trap, by filling an empty tin with water, carefully sealing it up, and placing it in a conspicuous place in his garage. The tin of water has been lifted, and if is to bo hoped that engine trouble has resulted by now.
