WAITARA.

JSOlt ocn OWN COKEESPONDENI. Feb. 26.—Tho Wetere left on Sunday for Pnponga for coal and arrived back yesterday morning. The Soldiers and Civilians’ Club committee met on Tuesday night and received the reports o£ the canvassers, whiclr showed that close on a hundred pounds had been' collected towards the £3OO which it was proposed to raiae. This sum is for furnishing purposes ;and initial expenses and when the £3OO is well in eight the committee will he in a better position to judge on the extent to which, it would be advisable to go as r egards premises. As I have repeatedly urged, do the thing properly and it cannot fail to be a success, for a club is - wanted in the town very badly. On Easter Monday there is to be a sports day on the Camp Reserve, the proceeds of which are in aid of the proposed club. It is to be an all-dav affair, so that there should be a good gathering. Private R. Rook is to be given a welcome home social to-morrow by the Waihi, settlers.

Some time ago I urged the borough council to make the few chains of road good from the end of the metal in Queen Street to the beach track. Townspeople will be "lad to see it met-' ailed, but economy or the funds at the disposal of the council is the rule nowadays, and we must be thankful for tho small mercy of the road having been repaired and graded so that visitors to tho beach by oar to-day will be able to do the trip with more comfort than they have had hitherto. Many people will regret to hear of the death of Mr. C. J. Wilson, of Urenui, whose vineries and orchard were an attraction to many travelling along the North Road. He came from London, and was well versed in the pioduction of coal gas, being employed in his younger days at the Vauxhail gas-works. He bought the property which is now well-known from Mr. C. N. Rowe nearly 30 years ago. Mr. Wilson was mi interesting man to talk to and could converse on a great many subjects. He was in bis 77th year when he died, and his passing away will ba regretted by many, other- than his Urenui neighbours .
