CENTRAL SCHOOL

MEETING OP COMMITTEE. A meeting of the committee of the Central School was held on Monday evening, when there were present;— Messrs. G. H. Dolby (in the chair), W. Girling, T. Hardgrave, F. A. Coleman (secretary) and H. A. Stratford (headmastex-). The headmaster reported; The Central School re-opened on Pebnxary 19. The attendance on that day was very small, owing to the very heavy rain. The roll number to-day is 641; on the re-opening day last year it -was 623. To-day there were 574 present; on tho first day last year there wore 566 present. Although sickness is prevalent the numbers in the various classes are generally higher tliig year than last year. In fact, in Standards 3,2 and 1 it has been necessary to refuse new pupils, as these classes are already overcrowded. As the average attendance for 1919 reached-, 601. tho school was place'c! in Grade 7d, and so became entitled to another assistant. Miss Rawliuson has been appointed temporary 10th assistant, and Miss Heal temporary Ilth assistant. . Misses Frank, Olsen, Roberts and Williams have been appointed junior teachers, I enclose a letter from Mr. Trimble regarding Poverty i Flat. The boys have now been denied the use of their ground for over IB months, but no doubt it would be wise to make a satisfactory job of the flat while the chance offers. The asphalt at Courtenay Street is improved by the re-tarring carried out during the holidays ; tho .overhead ladder's will’be a fine acquisition to the infant grounds, but they are at present about 4iu. too high. Arrangements for having the grass on Poverty Flat cut were left in the hands of the headmaster, and top-dressing will bo carried out later. A latter was. received from the board stating that the department refused to build a nexv Central School, and only proposed to add to the Courtenay Street School. Discussion of tho matter was left over till tho return of the chairman, Mr. S. G. Smith, ALP.
