WAITARA.

FKOM OCR OWN 'CORRESPONDENT. February 23.—1 t will be a great relief to hear of a further supply of benzine being allocated, to this district. The shortage is causing a good deal of anxiety to the dairy lancers, many of whom nave only a few clays’ supply and will have to go back to band milking as many of tue cows as they can unless relief comes quickly. There is a noticeable lessening Ot motor traffic, showing that owners of cars are giving up joy riding, and are using tneir cars only when absolutely essential. Preparations for the picnic on the beach on Thursday, when the Tabor Shield will be competed for, are well in hand, and it remains only for fine weather to ensure a pleasant and interesting day’s outing. AVhat a bewildering puzzle the tost of living is. Wages have been doubled, but it is very doubtful whether the worker is any better off, although he has more money to spend. Apparently tho cost of living will correspond indefinitely with the cost of labour. The people that really feel the pinch are those who have'a fixed inoogie, with no chance of increasing it. The vicnr of St. John’s last night delivered the first of his course of Lentorn addresses. 'The Rev. Mr. Barnett, of Urenui, will conduct the AVedncsday evening services at St. John’s Church during Lent. Housewives are grumbling because the fruit season is in full swing and they cannot fill their larder shelves with the customary jam for the winter owing to the sugar shortage. It is hard luck, but we shall be fortunate if wo get through tho next year without having to pay very dearly for the staff of life to put the jam on. Now Zealand does not grow nearly enough wheat to supply its needs, and if reports aro to be relied on imported wheat or flour is likely to bo very dear. The seaside picnic will draw a big crowd on Thursday to enjoy the mixed bathing. If you want to be “in tho swim” get one of those smart bathing suits offered so cheap at Rennie’s Sale. See page two. Hurry!*
