' REDUCTION OF FINENESS. ( ———— , By Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright. LONDON, Feb. 18. The House of Commons read a second time the Bill reducing the.fineness of silver coinage. ' fUr. Austen Chamberlain (Chancellor of the Exchequer) explained that the reason ivas the enhanced price of silver, which was 28d per ounce in 1914, and was now oyer 88d. It would probably be a long time before it would return to, its pre-war level. Mr. Chamberlain rejected a proposal to abolish threepenny pieces, for which there is a great demand. The Treasury has in readiness of 5s and smaller notes, which, though undesirable, must be issued if the Bill was not passed Aus.Assn.
