“Ho thinks he’s a goluf plAyor. But nobody plays tho game. They worruk at it)" observes Air. Dooley of his friend Hogan in tho chapter ‘’On Golf,” in ‘‘Air. Dooley: On Malting a Will and Other Necessary' Evils.” ‘Tn a gin’ral way,” continues Mr. Dooley, ‘‘all I can say about it is that it’s a kind iv a game iv ball that yo play with ye’er own worst inimy, which is yo’ersilf, an’ a man yo don’t Uko goes around with ye an’ gloats over ye, an’ a little boy follows yo to carry tIT clubs an’ hide ! th’ ball afthor ye’ve hit it. TIT ball is! small, made iv injy rubber an’ filled with a piziuous substance, an’ if yo hit it a good smash it busts an’ puts out yo’er eye. Yo’ro supposed to smash this little grenade fr’m place to place ; an’ hero an’ there an’ up an’ down an’ { hither an’ yon with an enormous in- 1 sthrument iv wood 'or iron, ontil in due time ye get to what is called a ] puttm’-groon. There’s a little hole j with a tin can in it in th’ middle iv ; this place, an’ whin ye’ro within a fut or two iv this hole ye take a small hammer out iv th’ bag, an’ yo hit th’ hall four or four times till it tumbles into th’ hole. Thin yo wipe th’ cold swet fr’m yo’er brow, write down ‘s’ on a little card, an’ walk away a few j feet an’ do it all over again.”
