MR. SMITH’S ATTITUDE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir—At his address to the electors at .Yogeltovnx on Saturday evening last Mr. Smith is reported to have said) “that it was absolutely false to say that ho had pledged hirascif to vote for Sir Joseph Ward, want he had said was that lie could not support Mr. Massey's party, but he never promised to support Sir Joseph Ward, andi further that he believed the Liberal Party had the best chance of going back to power, and that in a want of confidence motion he would vote against Mr. Massey.' 5 Why does Mr. Smith not announce at once what party he ‘is going to support for at the present time it very much looks like as if he is sitting on a rail to try and catch votes and then ultimately hitch up with a straight out Labour crowd. This idea is somewhat, borne out by the fact that lie has already made a statement that he is in favour of a sound Labour policy. Mr. Smith says he is not pledged to vote for Sir Joseph Ward, but what we want to know is is he going to support Sir Joseph Ward in a want of confidence motion irrespective of what the Labour party arc doing, or is he going to vote straight out for Labour r Many electors like myself would like a straight-out reply to this query, something absolutely definite in the shape of a pledge to _ the electors of this district. If this is not forthcoming it behoves the electors to very carefully watch what they are doing or else we might find that we have put a member in w T ho intends to side with what Mr. Smith calls sane Labour, but what is really insane politics.—l am, etc., _ INQUISITIVE. f
