STRATFORD.
FROM OUR RESIDENT AGENT, November 11.—There was little notice taken of the anniversary of the armistice. The townsfolk were waiting for tho cue from the Mayor and he was waiting for something official from Wellington. Doubtless the minds of many reverted to the day a year ago and in some cases with small pleasure, for it was not only the end of the war but tho beginning of the “flu.” 'A Cabinet Minister’s life at election time is a pretty strenuous one, as the Hon. J. B. Hino must bo discovering. He opened his campaign in tffo far end of tho East Hoad on Monday, came back to Stratford and opened a church bazaar to-day and is duo to speak' at Whangaraomona to-night. At the same time lie has to keep in touch with his department. A shocking piece of vandalism was perpetrated in the park on Sunday. Either, from malice aforethought or'' ignorant mischief, some miscreant ring-barked a fine ash tree of twenty years’ growth. Wo talk of mentality of the German people, but have individuals among us fully as difficult to understand. The domestic servant problem is exercising tho Hospital Board’s collective mind, but members discovered a solution at to-day’s meeting. It was a simple one after all, as many great discoveries have been. They just passed a resolution leaving the matter in the hands of the chairman with power to act. Some changes are taking place in the old established businesses of the town. It was announced the other day that two lawyer firms were amalgamating, i and now wo hear that Mr. N. J. King has sold his building and joinery business. Ho does not intend leaving tho district, a decision that will be welcome to those who know a good citizen.
