TANKS TO SCALE MOUNTAINS.

PARIS, Sept. 9. The French Tonring Club is making experiments with' demobilised' tanks to ascertain their practicability for mountain climbing expeditions. A competition was arranged between three tanks carrying passengers, the task being to climb a mountain'6oooft. high at Megeve in the Haute Savoie. The best time made was 1 hour 35min. for the ascent and 55min. for the descent. The petrol consumption of tho winning tank, a Renault, was, for the ascent four gallons, but only a quarter of this amount was needed for tho descent. Nine passengers, besides the driver, were carried on two scats facing sideways. The armour had been removed from the tanks before the competition. —Reuter.
