A recently demobilised officer has forwarded to the Daily Mail a mass of correspondence to show that, in'spite of waste in high places, claims on the public purse, for a few shillings are not paid without the most minute inquiry. On August 19 he sent to the army authorities a claim for 12s for travelling expenses—lls for two taxi-cabs and two sums of fid for porterage—in respect of a duty visit to a camp before being demobilised.' The. claim was returned with various queries, all, of which he answered in detail. More queries followed. The claim form has now been signed and stamped on seven occasions, and our correspondent has spent Is in postage, but so far the only result is that the claim has been reduced by Is.
