WELLINGTON, Sept. 22. Fruit as dessert is threatened by vegetables, which aro certainly dearer in'Wellington to-day. Hero aro some retail prices;—Good cauliflowers, Is to 2s; cabbages, (id to Is; rhubarb. Id per short stick ; s\yodo turnips, -id to Od each ; carrots (medium size), 2d; parsnips, Id; celery (small head). Gd; watercress, 2d. Imported fruits (duty added), including lemons at 3d to 3Jd each, all the way from California, arc cheaper than swede turnips, all ihe. way from the llutt Valley and even Otaki. American oranges, also carrying a heavy duty, aro 2td to 31d each—far cheaper than cauliflowers and requiring no cooking. Tho extreme price of vegetables at this season must prejudice the public health, except in the eases of people to whom money’ is no object and who can pay a wholesale price, oi 7s petpeck for green peas in the pod, which was realised in this market.
