ENGLEWOOD.
FROII OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT. Sept. 22.—The banks and solicitors’ offices were closed to-day in deference to Dominion Day, otherwise business was as usual in Inglewood. The Northern Junior Football Championship match took place at Inglewood on Thursday between Clifton and Stratford and resulted in a win for Clifton It being a. fine day, quite a large number of onlookers were present, including a good percentage of women, many of whom seemed as much interested as the men. Mr. F. Julian made an efficient referee. Inglewood golfers tried conclusions with Witiora at the Witiora links on Thursday, and wore badly beaten, Witiora scoring six wins and one all square, while Inglewood bad only ono win, Mr. C. o’Carroll being the lucky one. I hear that the genial Claud© is ordering larger hats now. On Friday last a big mob of cattle left here for the Thames. The cattle were valued at considerably over £3OOO. Mr. E. Julian was the drover in charge. He was accompanied by one of the buyers. Messrs. Fred and Rupert Nicholls, two of onr local returned wounded soldiers, left here on Friday morning for further treatment at the Trentham military hospital. At midnight on Friday a fir© was discovered by the nightwatchman In Mr. A. Lile’s bakery. Fortunately it was soon quenched, not a great deal of damage having been done. A good number of our volunteer fire brigade had gone to Eltham to a ball that night, so it was very fortunate that the tire was discovered so early, as the building is right in the centre of the main street, and had it got a good hold and the brigade short-handed, it would have been a tough fight. Mr. L. Errington, assistant at the electric power-house here, met with an accident whilst motor-cycling yesterday. While negotiating an awkward bond in the road near Lcpperton the cycle overturned and Mr. Errington had his leg broken. A friend who was with him returned to Inglewood for a car, and the unfortunate man was taken to New Plymouth Hospital where ho is reported to be doing as well as can ha expected. Mr. W. Rees, who was injured in the motor accident at Rugby Road a month ago, had so far recovered as to bo able to he up for a couple of days last week but an attack of pleurisy has sent him back to bed again. Gordon Mundt, aged 7 years, son of Mr. C. Mundt, of Kaimiro, .died in New Plymouth Hospital yesterday from appendicitis.
