PERSONAL.
A Sydney cable reports the death of Bishop Dunne, of Bathurst. Mr. J. P. M'Mahon-Bos is gazetted Chief Officer of Police at Niue Island, as from July 13 last. A London cable states that_ General Sir W. R. Bird wood has received the Freedom of the City of Totnes. The Hon. G. IV. Russell stated on Friday that Dr. Rangihiroa had been appointed special officer for health for the Native race.
Mr. C. E. Major has announced his intention of standing as a candidate for Manukau in the Liberal-Labour interests. The present member for that district is Sir Frederick Lang.
Mr. C. Peach, stationmastor at New Plymouth, has been'granted extended holiday leave. Mr. J. J. O’Shea, duct' clark, lias been appointed acting stationraaster.
His Honour Mr. Justice Hosking, having presided at the session of the Supreme Court which concluded today. proceeds to Wanganui, where tho session opens on Monday. Mrs. E. A. O’Donnell, Devon Street, has received word that her son, Corporal M. J. O’Donnell, of the 39th Reinforcements, is returning by the_ Ayrshire, due September 19. This is the fourth sou to return.
Mr. James Chisholm, it is understood, will bo tho new manager of the local branch of tho Bank of New Zealand. Mr. Chisholm was until recently _ manager at Hunterville and is now relieving at Wanganui.
At Wellington on Friday an investiture was held at Government House at which the Governor-General presented letters patent of knighthood to Sir J. IV. Salmond and Sir W. B. Edwards, and a number of other badges and decorations.
It is understood that Judge R. N, Jones of the Native Land Court, will be appointed Chief Judge in succession to tho late Chief Judge Jackson Palmer. Judge Jones is the senior Judge of the court, and acted as Chief Judge during the illness of tho late occupant of that office.
Mr. and Sirs. Still, Vogeltown, liave received advice that three of their soldier sons are returning to Now Zealand shortly. Private A. L. Still returns by the Geisscn clue nt clungiou on August 26, Corporal A. L. Still, M.M.. bv the Hororata clue at Wellington about September 20. and Corporal R. E. Still bv the Ayrshire due at Lyttelton about' September 20. Mr. and Mrs. Still sent seven sous to the front. Lance-Corporal J. H. Still was killed in action, whilst Private A. E. Still has already returned, and Private L. J. Still has yet to return.
