A UNION “TICKLER.”
BRISK LY-WORDED CIRCULAR. The “Tramway Tickler" is the name given by many of the recipients to a circular issued on behalf of the Amalgamated Railway and Tramway Association, in Sydney, by Mr. Claude Thompson, the general secretary (says the Sydney Sun). The New Permanent Way Union has been formed since the, big industrial trouble of 1917, and its members aro not regarded by those of the older organisation ns being spotless “lilywhites.” About 1000 men have received the circular, which reads;— .pear Sir, —Our association has directed" me to demand that you pay ill 11s 3d arrears of confributious, forthwith. The amount is made up as follows: From March to December, 1918, three quarters at 3s Dd—lls 3d; 1919, £1 in advance as per new rule. Total, £1 11s 3d. As you aro no doubt aware, it has been! decided by tho Full Industrial Court in tho case of Thompson v. Young, and tho Gas Workers’ Union M‘Laron, that members not resignin accordance with registered rules .;v liable for all contributions, levies, and lines imposed by the union. Reports of these cases arc enclosed for you to road. You have paid nothing to the union for about twenty months. How would you like it if Tsar Fraser kept you waiting years for your wages. You would drag him into court, would you not? Well, that’s what will happen to you, unless you, make yourself financial immediately. During the thirty years of its existence the Amalgamated has consistently fought for and obtained improved conditions and higher pay for railway and tramway men, lias expended thousands of pounds on wages boards, has secured over a million pounds in wage increases for employees, and has fought many successful lights against our common enemies—tho railway bosses.
Mr. C. Payntcr (secretary) and Harry Fi.shor (organiser), of tho Now Permanent Way Union, and many others havealready paid up—so must you. You are no doubt aware that by allowing your contributions to fall so much into arrears you have rendered yourself liable to a fine of £l. as provided for in rule 18. The association has no desire to enforce this fine, and will not do so if you pay within 14 days from tho date of this letter. This offer to remit the fine is made entirely without prejudice, and is contingent upon a first payment being made within a fortnight. Send along 10s as an instalment. It will save you trouble. Better pay up and have done with it. Do it now.
