mow oun own correspondent. August 3.—Tho Diggers of Tututawa entertained tho settlors of tho district on Friday. August 1 with a dance as a return for the hearty Avelcomes home accorded the men their return to their respective homos, after having well and ably done their duty for the Empire's cause. Tho hall was most tastefully decoratcd. the prevailing colours being rod. white and blue, interspersed with Chinese lanterns and fairy bells, with pnngas suspended from the roof, tho whole illuminated with arc lights, giving a. very brilliant and fairy-liko appearance. Before tho dancing conimc.ncod. the chairman. Mr. Holly, spoke briefly in reference to the dance and its object, which was appreciation for kindness received. Mr, Holly also made sympathetic .reference to the absence of the Simpson family, otying to their late bereavement, mentioning that the postponement of their dance for a fortnight uas owing to tho demise of the late Mr. F. AY. Simpson. There was a largo attendance in spite of the inclement weather, all the surrounding districts being represented. Mr. L. "Walker made a most efficient M.C.. Music was provided by the. Coreon family. piano, cornet and violin, and extras by Messrs. AVylic and Smith. Dancing wont merrily on till 11 o’clock, when a halt-was called for supper, which was of the best. Dancing was then resumed till 2 o’clock, when a second halt Avas called fov further refreshments, alter which the light fantastic was conl : rned till about 4 o’clock, bringing to a close a most enjoyable and memorable night’s amusement.
