BIG FRENCH SCHEME. OWING TO COAL SHORTAGE. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received August 7, 8.50 a.m.) PARIS, August 5. The shortage of coal has turned the attention of scientists to tho possibility of power from the river Rhone. ■ The Government has planned a gigantic hydro-electric scheme developing 750,000 horse-power. The damming of the river will render it navigable for 1200-ton vessels to Switzerland and will render possible tho irrigation of vast and fertile tracts. The scheme will take fifteen yiars to complete and cost a hundred millions sterling. Aus.-N.Z, Cable Assn.
