The shortage of coal has turned the attention of scientists to tho possibility of power from the river Rhone. ■ The Government has planned a gigantic hydro-electric scheme developing 750,000 horse-power. The damming of the river will render it navigable for 1200-ton vessels to Switzerland and will render possible tho irrigation of vast and fertile tracts.
