ENGLISH POLICE STRIKE.
ft STRIKERS ALL DISMISSED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. . LONDON, August 2. Forty shops were looted at Liverpool, including jewellers and pawnbrokers, the streets being strewn with wreckage. Special constables were largely enrolled. All the strikers were dismissed. The vacancies in the police ranks in London were rapidly filled, and 400 pensioners applied for permission to resume. General Macroady thanked the Metropolitan police for their splendid loyalty, and said he was convinced that now the force had been purged of discontent it would increase its great reputation. Nine hundred troops are guarding Liverpool Town Hall and shops.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. LONDON. August 3. Conflicts occurred at Liverpool, tho troops firing a volley overhead. Two thousand reinforcements arrived. A meeting of unionists resolved upon a general strike in sympathy with tho police. Liverpool is now strongly guarded with machine-guns and tanks.
