At Palmerston North to-day there was an important meeting of local business men and a committee was set up to consider condgnorit notes for the carnage of essential goods so as to make recommendations to the Railway Department. —Press Assn. At a mooting held at Kawaroa on Monday in connect ion with tho Soldiers’ Hostel ball, there was an attendance of about 40 ladies. Mrs. A\. Denton and W. H. Denton, were not in the Northampton eleven which met Lancashire in the opening cricket match of the season at Northampton, but Mr. A. D. Denton, their younger brother, played. While serving with tho Royal ANest Kent Regiment, in which he field a commission, ho was wounded so badly in July, 1917, that one of his legs liad to be amputated. Ho lias been batting in great form, and, except that lie has difficulty in running, his artificial leg lias not affected his cricket. Lancashire will probably bo asked to allow him to have a runner. Ho will field in the slips. On Thursday next it is intended to finish the children's Pence, motor ride. It will be remembered that owing to lack of ears 440 children could not ho taken, and it is now proposed to give tlicm a. treat, on Thursday. A pathetic appeal has been received on behalf of 30 children at a neighbouring school, which states that there are no cars in that locality, and that the children could not get a ride. It appeals to the committee to provide the necessary cars. Here is an excellent opportunity for non-carowners who could help to hire one or two cars for the sake of the children, many of whom have never been in a motor-car. • Mr. R. Day has the arrangements in hand, and will he pleased to hear from persons who will make the trip or those who are willing to help with donations.
