BRITISH TENDER ACCEPTED
- AGAINST LOWER AMERICAN TENDER. FOR ELECTRIC POWER PLANT. The Dunedin City Council has decided to accept the tender of £ue British AVestinghouse Company for a synchronous motor for Halfway Bush, although the American General Electric Company’s tender was £3258 as against the British firm’s £4070, and the latter required a longer term for delivery, says the Dunedin Star of 25th July. Councillor Shacklock, in introducing the matter, said that at the last meeting of the council the matter of accepting a tender for the motor had been held over for further information by cablegram. This now had been received, and the engineer recommended that tlie tender of the British AA’estinghouse Company be accepted. The purpose of recommending this tender was to obtain a motor of English manufacture. An American machine could be obtained for £BOO less, and delivery got in five months, whereas the British machine could not be delivered for nine months. The delay might involve some restriction on the users of electric power. He would move, that the tender of the British AVestinghouse Company be accepted, provided delivery be given in nine months. Councillor Sincock asked would the AVestinghouse machine bo a more durable machine, and what loss was involved to the small users (at present restricted) in the fact that the machine would not get hero for nine months. Unless there was some defect in the American machine ho felt inclined to adhere to their original idea of getting the; American machine, which could be secured quicker. Councillor Clark said he was surprised to hear Councillor Sincock. He hoped the council would not go beyond the Empire because a little incouvenicilce or money was involved. Councillor Shacklock, in reply, said the British AA’cstinghbuso machine was quite satisfactory. The department would do its best to meet the demands of tho consumers without restrictions, and if such were necessary it would be only in the dead of winter. The tender w’as accepted.
