ELTHAM.

FROM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT. July 30.-—A motor car accident, in which Mrs. APSwconey, of MatS*. was fatally injured, occui-rod in High Street this afternoon. The deceased was ti availing in Mr. M'Queen's car. which was travelling behind one of Mi'. Bunn’s ears, and as the latter was being turned into the owner’s garage, Mr. Al’Queen attempted to pass, and colliding, turned completely over. Mrs. M‘Sweeney was pinned under the car, meeting with injuries to which she .succumbed about an hour after the mishap. The drivers of the cars escaped unhurt. The deceased was well advanced in years, and resided with her daughter. Airs. Potts. Six of her sons have been on active service.

Some particularly severe eases of hardship are being felt here—as elsewhere—by the restrictions on passenger traffic on railways. An Eltham lady received an urgent summons yesterday to proceed to AA'ellington. but this morning when she requested a railway ticket it was refused. Her entreaties were unavailing, the railway authorities deeming her business to be not of sufficient importance to permit her to travel on the. train. r J he lady, however, thought otherwise, and had to depart for AVellington in a motor car. To ease the struggles of a widow, who has re-eutly had an unusual share of ill luck, two Eltbamilcs thought it would be a good ; ct to spend a Sunday working on her behalf. They accordingly set out alter an early breakfast ami proceeded to the river-bed and spent the day there gathering drift wood. By dark they had a lingo pile gathered for the widow's benefit, and they proceeded to her home and told her what they had done—advising that a carter he dispatched in the morning to take home the welcome lac!. The earner wa.s duly dispatched, but the early lord catches flic early worm, and someone had, at crack of day. backed his curt in and taken the lot away. The would-be benefactors vow that next time they attempt a similar act they will keep a watch over their spoils, and also carry a shot gun. For the past four years Eltham has had but one resident doctor, who has had a most strenuous time during that period. A second medico wili now bo available. Dr. keeper, who has just concluded a 11 years’ military service, having commenced practising hero. The housing problem here is very acute, with the .result that anyone desirous of selling will find a purchaser, especially if only a small deposit is rccuircd. One land agent informed rnc that ho is disposing of houses at the rate of two or three weekly. The Rev. O. At. Stent, who has been, temporarily in charge of All Saints’ Church during the past throe njouths, has left for AVellington. The new vicar will be Hie IRov. All'. Castle, from island Bay.
