A quaint feature in connection with the mine which was exploded at Oakura this morning was the existence of a peculiar shell-fish which had fastened itself securely at the base of one of the horns. At a casual grance this crustacean creature of the deep appeared almost to be some species of flower . From the top of a pink and white funnel of shell it was able to poke out a conical-shaped portion of its anatomy, which would have been a beak if it belonged to a bird, as it could open out to form a month. For three days this curious fish was able to open its mouth and gape at the hundreds of . people who came to see the mine. At the dawn of the fourth day an effort was made to preserve the shellfish by pulling it from its bed, but other by-standers urged ‘‘don’t pull too hard!” having fears of what the effect might he on the horn of the mine. Consequently the fish went on another long journey with the mine- on which it had spent its life.
