STATUES EXHUMED.
IN ENGLISH CHURCHYARD. A strange exhumation has just been made in the churchyard of Millbrook, Bedfordshire, England. For years a tradition has been current in the Tillage that-some 60 or 70 years ago two life-size effigies were removed from an altar tomb in the church, “as they were heard to give vent to dismal and disconcerting noises, that tJioy avctc put in the cellar at the rectory, whore they continued to make the same noises, and that this led to their being removed and buried in the churchyard. Recently the local archaeologists decided to test the story by an excavation. The first two days yielded no result, and on the third day an old inhabitant suggested a certain spot lor excavation. This was carried out by the Rev. 11. P. Pollard, rector of the parish, and the Rev. Perm’ Cl. Langdon, president of the Bedford Modern School Archaeological Society, with 16 members of the latter society. At length the two stone statues were found, , partly mutilated, and garbed in costumes of the Elizabethan period. They wore removed to the church.
