PERSONAL.

Mr. A. M'Kay, Fitzroy, has received word that her husband, Rifleman A. M'Kay, is returning by the Tahiti, due in Auckland about July 2. Mr. C. Carter has been notified that his son, Private T. G. Carter is returning by the Tahiti, due in Auckland July 2.

Mrs. Kinsella, Molesworth Street, has received word that her son, N. P. Kinsella, is returning by the Tahiti, duo Auckland, July 2. Colonel C. M. Gibbon C.M.G., 1.G.5., who is vacating the post of Chief of the General Staff, will leave for England by the Remuera to-day. Mr. F. Honan, who has charge of the Phoenix Insurance Department in Mr. Newton King’s office, has been appointed a member of the Hawera Fire Board.

.Captain Clayden, commander of the Arawa, has been appointed to succeed the late Captain M'Dougall as marine superintendent in the South Island for the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company.

Mr. J. B. Henry, who has been 12 years manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Masterton, has been promoted to the position of inspector. He will take up his residence in Wellington at an early date. His successor will be Mr. J. Chisholm, acting-man-ager at Wanganui and _ formerly of H miter ville.

At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Friesian Cattle Breeders’ Association a vote of condolence was passed with the widow and family of the late Mr. W. James, the president and members paying a high tribute to the good work the late Mr. James had done for the Friesians in the Dominion.

Mr. L. Eiera, accountant for many years in Sir. Newton King’s Stratford branch, is about to take a healthrecruiting trip to England. On the eve of his departure he was on Wednesday presented by the staff with a substantial cheque as a tangible expression of their good wishes. Mr. A. Patrick will take Mr. Riera’s place during the latter’s absence. Opportunity was taken at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Friesian Cattle Association to present the retiring president (Mr. C. C. Buckland) with a case of'pipes, suitably inscribed, .on the eve of his departure for Canada, where he intends to reside in future. Mr. Buckland was also made a life member of the association. One speaker remarked that the association had lost two men whose places they could never fill, viz., Mr. Newton King and now Mr. Buckland.

Brigadier-General W. It. H. Burgess. C.M.G., D. 5.0., who has been awarded the honour of Companion of the Bath, is a son of the late llov. George Burgess, for some years minister of Betesford Street Congregational Church, Auckland. General Burgess was not born in Auckland but arrived there from England ■with his parents when a lad. Afterwards he was farming at Papakura, where his mother stiß resides. He received his military training in New Zealand, being formerly a member of the Staff Corps and stationed at Hamilton as group commander-. Prior to the war he was in Australia and left with the Commonwealth Forces. He served with distinction at Gallipoli and was awarded the D.S.O. His service with the Australian artillery in France resulted in promotion to‘the rank of Brigadier-General. He was awarded the French Cross of the Legion of Honour. For the past 18 months General Burgess has been commanding an artillery division, in France, and is now assisting iyith the demobilisation of the forces.
