MEETING OF GOVERNORS. The monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of the New Plymouth High Schools was held on Monday evening. Present: Messrs. L. C. Sladden (chairman), J. S. Fox, S. G. Smith, M.P., A. H. Johnstone, L. A. Nolan, F. W. Atkinson, and E. P. Webster. Before proceeding with the business of the meeting, the chairman extended a hearty welcome to the new members, Messrs. A. H. Johnstone and L.' A. Nolan. Both members suitably replied. Tho board’s architect (Mr. W. A. Gumming) forwarded certificate of amount expended in laboratory fittings, totalling £613 13s 3d; also a sketch for the laying out of the school grounds.— Referred to tho Grounds Committee to report upon at next meeting. Mr. H. Searle, Christ’s College’, Cambridge, wrote thanking the board for keeping his position on the staff of the Boys’ High School open during the war. He desired to know whether his remaining in England a little longer would meet with the approval of the board. In • the ordinary course of events he should be back about June, 1919. By March, 1920, however, he could sit for a Cambridge degree. That would mean a 4elay of nine months in getting back to New Zealand; but it would be undoubtedly worth while, as far as the school was concerned, as it would enable him to brash up the work which has naturally become . a little rusty, and also to take advantage of the splendid facilities offered for advanced work in science and mathematics. It was decided to extend the term of leave as desired. It was decided to apply to the Borough Council for permission to have the balance of the Avenue Road Reserve put up for lease at auction. As the term of,the representatives of tho pupils’ parents on the board expires shortly, July 24 was fixed as the date of tho poll for an election. The following standing committees were set up.—Finance and staff; Messrs. Sladden, Trimble, Webster, Nolan, and Johnstone. Supplies, buildings, and grounds: Messrs. Fox, Smith, Nolan, Johnstone, and Dr. Fookes. The secretary reported that the Government had paid tho balance of the £SOOO grant, and there was a promise of the balance of the £IOOO subsidy shortly. It was decided to apply for a further subsidy on the balance subscribed by the public, and also to ask for a grant of £llOO for the purpose of building tho now wing on. the boys’ boarding establishment, in order to make provision for the boys now accommodated in the racecourse buildings. Accounts amounting to £4426 15s od were passed for payment.
