PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. _M;iy 30. —At the Inglewood school, on Wednesday last, the annual box opening of Dr. Barnardo’s Young Helpers’ League took place. There were about 50 members present and 20 adults. The vice-president, Mrs; Martin Sutherland, presided, and gave a short address on the wonderful work of Dr. Barnardo’s Homes, and reminded those present that this was the jubilee year of the homes, and suggested that a special effort should be made this year. At present the office of president is vacant, on account of Mr. D. P. Evans leaving the school. It was decided that the office be not filled until the new headmaster arrives, and that he bo requested to be president. The following ladies consented to join the committee for the ensuing year: Mesdamos Dean, Evans, Gleuie, Homer, Julian, Larsen, Messenger, Partridge, Peterson, Robb, Roberts and Ye at os. The boxes yielded the sum of £l7 6s with three boxes still to come in. Mervyn Larsen gets Mrs. M. Sutherland’s prize for havipg the largest amount in his box, £4 Is Id. Members who have been in the league for three years, who have paid their annual subscriptions and have collected at least 5s each year, qualify for the society’s silver badge. The following children qualified: Florence Press, Dorothy Hook, Queenie Gernhoefer, Esther Robb, Mervyn Larsen, Annis Hamerton, Gordon Yeates, Ethel Bnckth ought, Colin Evans, Colin Horner, Omm Dean. A very enjoyable programme was given by the junior members; recitations by Nancy Paterson and Ira Glcnie, action song by 15 small children, and two pianoforte solos. All present were then entertained to a bountiful afternoon tea.
The hockey members met yesterday afternoon and elected officers for the year. President, Mr. Armstrong: vicepresident, . Mr. W. Eagar; secretary, Mr. J. Kilpatrick; committee, Mrs. Lindsay, Misses E. Harvey and M. Weston, Messrs. A. Bailey, A. Gillis and W. Stephens. Subscription, ladies 2s 6d, gentlemen ss l (payable in advance). The first shoot for the Wilson Cup was fired on the Inglewood range on Thursday, and resulted in a win for Vice-President 0. Spurdle, with a net score of 93. Before the shooting started, Mr. E. Crossman, the secretary of the club, called the members together andi said that they were met to shoot for the Wilson Cup, generously donated by Mr. D. Wilson, and called on that gentleman to fire the first shot. Mr. Wilson, in replying, said that he hoped the cup would afford the members much pleasure in a sport which was undoubtedly the best in the world and of great benefit to the Empire. Three hearty cheers were then given for Mr. Wilson, who immediately afterwards fired the first shot and got a bull’s eye. The following are the scores:—
