WAITARA.
from our own correspondent. May 29.—A meeting was held last' night in the Foresters’ Hall of toe newly formed choral society. The chair was occupied by Mr. S. Gr. Frater., There was a satisfactory number present. Miss Marlow,A.RlC.M., was appointed to wield the baton; Mrs. Marlow, L.R.A.M., A.R.C.M., accompanist; Mi-. Whattingham, secretary and treasurer; Miss Walker, librarian: and a committee consisting of Mesdames Johns and Marlow, and Messrs. Vaughan, Jugger, and! Fear. It is hoped that the society will bo regarded as entirely democratic,, and that all. able. to sing will join to help make toe society a success. The rehearsals will be held ordinarily every Tuesday evening; but owing. to Tuesday of next week being the "King’s birthday, the first rehearsal will be held on the Wednesday. Waitara is quite large enough to rim a really good choral society, and it is hoped that with good ment and pleasant rehearsals that the Waitara Choral Society will have a successful career.
A ratepayer- writes: —The time arrived many years ago when there should have been a ratepayers’ league formed in Waitara, for the purpose of checking reckless and incapable handling of borough finance. The old proverb says, “United we stand, divided: we fall,” whito is particularly correct, where ratepayers’ interests are concerned. Without the aid or hacking of a rnajoz-ity of the ratepayers, one or two can make little or no impression on toe hide of the average local polii tical rhinoceros. Therefore it is essential for the protection of the ratepayers' pockets that a league should be formed! for that purpose, by making an united protest agsjinst going round financial curves at such speed as has been done during toe last few years. Now is an opportune time for someone who really has the ratepayers’ interests at heart to make the necessary move by convening a meeting for that purpose. Should this take place a more watchful eye could he kept on the future movements of councillors, and toe amount of ability they display in the expenditure ofHhe rates. It is more particularly required now, that there should be no passengers in the borough boat while it is being rowed against the strong financial current, and one and all of toe crew should be able to do his bit without loafing on the strong ones.
