A DESERTER SENTENCED

CHRISTCHURCH, May 27,
Tho District Court Martial which sat at Christchurch has sentenced John Courtenay, a baker, of Timaru, to 90 days’ detention for his failure to concentrate with the reinforcement draft on May 20, 1918. Courtenay gave himself up to the military authorities voluntarily, and pleaded guilty to the charge. GREEN ISLAND MINE DISPUTE. DUNEDIN, May 27. The conference between the mineowners of Green Island mines and representatives' of the Miners’ Federation, was held to-day, when tho employers made an offer of an increase in the present tonnage hewing rate, and agreed to the demands of the men regarding shift and wages. The men’s delegates placed the proposals before the meeting tonight, when they were definitely rejected.
DELAY TO THE MAORI,
WELLINGTON, May 27,
The Maori, for Lyttelton, sailed at 10.23 p.m., the delay being caused by trouble with the firemen and stokehold crew. There were three men short of tho complement, and the vessel will travel at reduced speed. The Maori will remain in Lyttelton until Thursday and then resume her usual running. The Maori and Mararoa have about 800 passengers. AUCKLAND TRAMWAY DISPUTE. AUCKLAND, May 28. A notice, signed by every member of the Tramway Officers’ Union, of their intention to strike unless their demands are conceded within fourteen days, has been served on tho manager of the company.
