REPATRIATION WORK.
STATEMENT BY MINISTER,
Per Press Association
WELLINGTON, May 28. Reference to tho question of repatriation was made by tho Hon. W. D. S. MacDonald last nighty at a dinner to tho delegates of the AVcllington Farmers’ Provincial Union. So far as giving tho returned soldier his duo, said tho Minister, we know it is absolutely impossible. to assess in money tho sacrifices the soldiers of this country made. We do not mean we are doing all that the soldier i.s entitled to perhaps, but we are doing all that the country can possibly do as far as your means will allow. Some gentlemen, who had gathered together in one of the southern cities, were talking a. good deal about what ought to he done, hut they never said anything about what had been done. Every member of repatriation committees Was trying to do his best for the returned men. The AI inister of Lands was in a very difficult position, because he had to get the right class of land for soldiers in the right position at the right price. To put soldiers on the land with success was no easy thing to do. Tho Government did not want to put soldiers on the land where they might not bo a success.
