LEST WE FORGET.
“BUSINESS AS USUAL” ON ANZAC DAY. ‘AUCKLAND, April 23. A ll z,re Day is being observed as a partial holiday. Some business firms closed' all day, others from midday, and others for a short period to enable employees to attend the memorial service in tho afternoon. Much feeling was expressed at the annual meeting of the Returned Soldiers’ Association owing to tho decision of a number of business men to continue business on Anzac Lay. A motion was carried asking the Government to declare the day a close holiday; also that lists, of offending firms bo published. LEST WE FORGET. That wo are open for tho tide of trade, Is all because of triumph in the fight, Duo to men who went, arid unafraid Laughed at the dangers in appalling night; And while they fought and suffered for tho cross. Wo raised our prices to prevent a loss. Prospered us never in the times of peace, Sold easily what once we had to boom, Found at tiio tallying up a marked increase, While all the western world was wrapped in gloom! And through that period of thrust and stab, We made the most of for to fleece and grab. And such ns we arc asked to pull the blind, To put the shutters up to mark the day, When for tho cause of Christ and all mankind, The Anzae soldier gave his life away. We’re sorry and of course bemoan his lot, But closing down means loss—we’d rather not. H.C.G.
