DEMONSTRATION AT RICCARTON. CHRISTCHURCH, April 22. A demonstration, that at one time seemed to have ugly possibilities, occurred on Riccarton racecourse, after the Autumn Nursery Handicap. There were six starters, whose names were posted separately on the totalisator, and the public assumed that, following the ordinary practice, there would be two dividends. Notice was posted on tha machine blackboards that Sundance and Kilgour, though ostensibly belonging fo different owners, were coupled, Sundance being raced on lease from the owner of Kilgour. This eliminated the second dividend, but, for some reason, the authorities recorded tbo investments on the horses .separately. Many of the investors were ignorant of tbo coupling, and when only one dividend was paid out the backers of Some Kid, tho second horse, made a demonstration in front of the totalisator, and subsequently in front of the stewards’ stand. Many of them invaded fhe course, just as the next race was about to start, and rhe police had to take steps to clear tho course. Some of tho crowd showed a disposition to be noisy and argumentative, but tho police handled the business tactfully, and the demonstrators gradually reverted to silence. FEILDING MEETING. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. SYDNEY, April 22. Despite tho auctioneers’ assurance that racing would be resumed almost immediately, yearling sales evoked little interest. Bora goon progeny topper! tho market. A Beragoon—Lady Rufus colt fetched 725 guineas; Beragoon—Gomlot colt 660 guineas; Reputation-—Dismay colt 410 guineas, NOTES BY “HISTORICUS.” Bad luck is dogging the Wairarapa owner,, Mr. Kcmball, as on top of the death of Nanna, Scornful and Ilymestra have gone wrong. Kareao was shockingly ridden at Woodvillo. This gelding is fast, and has a chance in any hack sprint from now on. After a very old and wot night, tho weather cleared for tho second day’s racing at Wood villa. Vacuum was looked on as good for the Hurdles, but after having-every chance at the last fence stopped to a walk in the run home. Tho Stratford-ownod Gunwale was greatly benefited by the first day’s race, and always looked like winning over tho last | half-mile. Pervolo was installed favour-1 ito for tho Ktimeroa Hack, on tho | strength of her good showing on tbo previous day ; she ran badly. Ormond’s cast-off, Honey Bee, scored by inches from the Taranaki gelding Prince Formby; the winner was lucky enough to get through on tho rails. Cadet was a hot order in tho Ballance Hack; ho jumped out first but fell back, and 1 at tho homo turn was several lengths away ; tho loaders, as usual, swung out, and Gray, seizing the situation at a glance, got through on the fence. He had to ride tho Carl Rosa gelding hard, and it is safe to say no other horseman at tbo meeting would have won on the Taranaki gelding. Solid support came for Henry Clay for tho Autumn Handicap, on the strength of his good work with Rewi Poto. Tho chestnut gave a little trouble at the post, and eventually lost several lengths at tho word “go.” Gray bad him in a good position turning for home, and, riding bard, looked a v,'inner half-way down tho straight; here the Signor gelding compounded, and Bagdad just lasted long enough to stall Classification off. As anticipated in my last notes, Risinghnm won the Settlers’ Hack. The Taranaki mare Claris carried the confidence of her party, but tho rise in weight stopped her, Ewingham i winning comfortably. After tho failure of Henry Clay, Simonides was withdrawn from the Shorts. The event was a good betting race, five of the runners being evenly backed. Ina-h was first out, but was beaded by Rawakorc turning for heme; onco in the straight Samarang headed tho black mare, hut bad to bo hard ridden to keep Croesus (which jumped out badly) at bay. Lord Muskcrry was backed for tho Juvenile a.s if tho event was all over. Tho Hawke’s Bay representative had every chance, but was lucky in getting within a head of the locally-trained Esthonia. This gelding got anything but a good run either day, and is evidently very useful. Paddy Soally turned hint out in good order. The meeting closed with ' the win of Want over a lot of “moder-I ates” in the Maharahara Handicap. Robur was well supported, but again I failed badly. In this issue tho Auckland' Racing Club advertises that nominations for tho big events at the winter meeting dose on Friday next, April 25, at 5 p.m. Nominations for all events at the Wa- ' nganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting close on Friday next, 25th inst., at 8 p.m.
