THE KING IN PARIS.
A SPLENDID RECEPTION, ARC DE TRIOMPHE RE-OPENED. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright,
PARIS, Nov. 29
As the King’s train, decorated with Allied colours, steamed into Paris, a salute of 101 guns was fired. M. Poincare (President) embraced the Royal visitor. The crowds in the streets were never greater in the history of the city. King George had a tremendous reception. The route was filled with poilus and thronged with immense and enthusiastic crowds, which started to assemble hours before daylight. The Champs Elysoes was lined with captured .guns. , , A dramatic incident was that of the opening of the Arc de Triomphe in honour of tho King’s visit. It had been closed for 47 years, when it was defiled by the passage of the Gormans during their occupation of Paris. Frenchmen vowed it should remain closed until the stain of national disgrace was removed. Napoleon built the arch in memory of Austerlitz.
