Mr. Peter Barr, a member of th© Defence Expenditure Commission, ha© had a breakdown, in health, and it at present resting in a private hospital in Wellington, He has been unable to sit with the Commission this week. Mr. B. Masters, chairman of the Education Board, left for Wellington this morning, and while there will interview the Education Department regarding the proposed new schools at Vogeltown and Normanby, also additions to the Technical College, and at Anroa, and other matters. In the latest hospital report published the following Taranaki names appear: Seriously ill, Lance-Corporal J- H. Bower. Severe case, B. C. Clifford (Kakaramea). Not severe oases: Bombardier W. L. F. Porter (Tariki), S. A. Wells (New Plymouth). The death is reported in acti in in France of Private IV. Scanlan, who was well-known in the Stratford and Ngaere districts, where he world prior to enlisting and leaving nth the 22nd Reinforcements. He was abont 23 years of age. Hickman, who was for so many years constable at Pungarehu. “Tommy.” as friends all call him is looking as fit as a fiddle and qu te able to repeat his Parihaka exploits. He had a long and honourable career in the A.O. force, and as a police constable, and about seven years ago re tired on his well-earned pension.—Eltham Argus. Tho Education Board on Wednesday appointed Mr. David Evans, who has been acting as headmaster of the Inglewood school for the past two years, to the position permanently. Mr. H. A. Stratford, the former headmaster, who recently returned from the front, was granted leave of absence till June 30, prior to taking up his appointment as headmaster of the Central School. Another of the pioneers, of the Dominion passed away at Napier on Thursday, in the person of Air. C. W. MountfoVt. The late ALr. Alountfort, who was 02 years of ago. and his brother. Air. B. W. Alountfort, came out to Lvitelton at the same time in the ship' Charlotte Jane, both being newly married. Mr. C. W. iMountfort joined the survey staff of tho Otago Provincial Government in the late ’fifties, and was surveying in Canterbury from 1868 to 1875, since when his work had been in the. North Island. He died at his daughter's house in Napier.
