Le Temps’ Zurich correspondent quotes an influential personage as stating that the recent strikes in Berlin r.nd elsewhere were organised as a. protest against the projected offensive. The workers shrank from the sacrifice of life, and insisted that the offensive should be regarded as a means of peace and not another fruitless episode. It is also reported that there was a violent scene between the Kaiser and the headquarters staff, anil that General LudendortT spoke so violently that the Kaiser, pale with banged the table and cried: “Are you Emperor, or am 1?” Ludondorff replied; “I am only a soldier, and want peace, and 1 believe I can obtain it with this offensive.” The “personage” adds that the German food situation is not desperate, but the workers are ''disturbed by the conditions of the Russian peace, anticipating an influx of cheap labour from Lithuania, Courland and Poland.

The Kaiser, in a telegram to the Vice-President of the Reichstag, says: We have by God’s aid dealt a heavy blow' to the English military power. Many German people, and their Parliament particularly, draw the fullest confidence from the greatness of this accomplishment that the Gorman might may bring us peace hy force. Everything depends on the people at home preserving their will to victory. The coming world peace will he better secured by German might than hitherto. To this end may Goa help us. The Kaiser telegraphed to Knipps congratulating them on the new long range gun, adding: ‘‘lt is a new and glorious page in the history of the house, oi Krupp demonstrating the mastery of German science.”
