MONTHLY MEETING. FROM OUB OWN COIUIKBPOWDBM. ; The monthly meeting of the Ingle, wood Borough Council was held on Wednesday. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. G. Young), Councillors Fawcett, Sutherland, Gamlin, Buckley and Cold well. CORRESPONDENCE. The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote informing the council that Mr. R. A. Morgan, of Waitara, had been appointed to the board. The Boy Scouts wrote asking permission to use tables, trestles and chairs in the Town Hall for their sports.— Permission already granted, action approved. The Salvation Army Sunday School wrote for pe|-mission to use the Domain for a picnic on February I.—Permission already granted, action approved. The Auckland Underwriters’ Association reported that alterations (specified technically) must be effected to the electrical installation to make it safe ; otherwise rate will be raised 5s per cent.—The electrical engineer (Mr. Stewart) reported that the matter was being attended to. Two applications for water-supply were granted. The Inglewood Eire Brigade applied for and were granted their anual subsidy of £25. . WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee reported; We recommend that Mr., Eaulger be supplied with .the necessary utensils for keeping the. area of the town clean; that we mutually agreed upon. The bridge in Kelly Street, has been inspected by Mr. Branch, who reports, he-, can strengthen the structure .with the -timber he had for. the.culvert in Richmond Street, and we; recommend this work be done. As the-council meets to-mor-row night, we have instructed the engineer to engage two men to -, assist him to regulate the motor traffic on Wednesday, and Thursday, feeling sure you will approve of our action. The engineer has given hi a hike for the use of the borough workmen, and we recommend that the council pay the upkeep of same. The workmen have started to tar the footpaths in the centre of the town, and if fine weather continues the work will be completed in. a few .days. ; A great amount of cleaning weeds has been done throughout thp town,—Adopted. Councillor Gamlin. moved and Councillor Fawcett seconded: “That the electrical eommittee formulate a scheme for the new electrical works, to be submitted to the ratepayers.”—Carried. MISCELLANEOUS. A remark of his .Worship, at the previous meeting, that Councillor Fawcett had always been a bar on the wheel of progress, had evidently rankled with the latter. He rose to ask the Mayor lust what reforms.he (.Councillor Fawcett had tried to bar,, particularising a good many progressive moves and putting his Worship through, a catechism in regard to them. Uis Worship said that Councillor Fawcett had been granted a very great concession by being allowed to put such a series of questions. It . was impossible for him to remember Councillor, Fawcett’s atti-. tude.in regard, to many of them, .as some of the business referred to was carried out , before, his (the Mayor’s) term of office. He thought, that Councillor Fawcett was unable to take what every public man must expect at times —a "defeat. With one exception, the planting of a certain hedge—Councillor Fawcett had, never been the means of initiating a. progressive, scheme. .Councillor Fawcett thought, the Mayor .had, to say the least, exceeded the limits of courtesy at the, previous meeting. He (Councillolr Fawcett), .had at any rate fought tooth and mail-for the freehold conversion, and had been drawn into one or two rows, in consequence.—The matter was then allowed to drop. ■ Councillor Goldwoll reported that the ringing .apparatus for the firehell was ,to. be sent forward' by the next steamer.. .Other necessary material would soon he to.hand, and he hoped that the foreman could be spared to lay the foundation as soon as possible. Left in the foreman’s hands. Air. Branch (the foreman) reported that, over 40 cars had been pulled up that day : for. ; exceeding the speed limit. Their numbers had been taken, and prosecutions would follow on the ascertaining of the drivers’ names. The majority had been very reasonable for a race day,’ and had travelled at a steady pace.—Air. Branch was appointed to act as traffic inspector for the Hawera races. Accounts amounting to £585 2s 5d were passed for payment. This concluded the business. Air. J. Wilson, of the local post and telegraph office, has been transferred to Shannon. A few days ago he had a narrow escape from drowning at the baths, the accident happening ) under very simple and unexpected circumstances. While standing-on the edge of tho baths, ho was playfully pushed in by another bather. Happening to bo taken with a coughing hi at the moment, jVlr. Wilson “got a mouthful” so badly that he was sinking for the third time before anyone noticed him to be in difficulties, and was insensible when rescued. Luckily he was soon brought around, much to the relief of tho practical joker. Air. Wilson happens to be well-used to swimming, and the result of the joke was little to be expected by anyone. , ' > Miss AI. Wilson, probationer, and Aliss Paulger, pupil teacher, commenced their duties at the school yesterday. A handicap singles tournament for ladies and men is being held at present, the first round to bo concluded this week. Some very close games have already taken place.
