QUAINT RAFFLE PRIZE.
■FREE DEFENCE IN POLICE COURT A novel raffle held at Parkgate, Cheshire, has raised £6OO for parcels for prisoners of war in Germany. Among tho prizes were a cheap Russian ikon and two white mice. Further inducements varied from the free extraction of a tooth to a quart of shrimps and from champagne to castor oil. According to tho advertisement circular anybody buying 50 tickets for 12s 6d was bound to win a prize, as he was “backing every horse”—the buyer’s name going straight on to the list of winners. Among other treats and treasures to bo won were: “Week-ends in North Wales and free defence in the police court,” “petticoats and porkpies,” - “bathing dresses and brawn,” “chickens and war certificates,” “port wine and hairwash,” “shrimps from Parkgate and shells from Passchendaele.” A porcelain Toby jug caricature of Sir John Jellicoe fetched £lO0 —“with his autograph and good wishes thrown in.”
