EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Board was continued on. AVednesday afternoon, when the following additional business was done;— HEADMASTERS’ MONTHLY REPORTS. The secretary of the Hawera School Committee wrote stating that at the last meeting of the committee some discussion jfas occasioned by thb brevity of the headmaster’s report. It was therefore decided to ask the board to state wbat information tbe committee might .expect the headmaster to supply with reference to the internal working of the school, as the committee felt that the headmaster should give certain information in his monthly report, or present the records of the school for inspection. The Chairman stated that the board had no regulation making it compulsory for headmsisters to furnish monthly reports to committees. Members expressed the opinion that it was desirable such a regulation should be made. In order to judge the matter, the board 1 decided to ask the Hawera Committee for a copy of the reports complained of. A similar letter was received from the Ongarue Committee, which stated that no monthly reports were at present submitted by the headmaster, and! the committee will be informed that the board has the matter under consideration.

AVAR BURSARIES. ~ A Gazette circular was received setting forth the award and tenure of war bursaries to further the education of young persons of either sex who were certified to be. the dependents of soldiers who had been killed through active military >ervice or who had suffered disablement.—lt was decided to reply that the matter would receive the widest publicity possible. GENERAL. The appointment of Mr. H. AVilmshurst on the Douglas School Committee in place of Mr. J. Alain was confirmed. A communication was received from the secretary of the Educational Council stating that the boardls proposals regarding the Stratford Technical High School would be brought before the' next meeting of the council. A letter was received from Lieut, ft. A. Stratford, from Brookehhurst Hospital, acknowledging his appointment aa headmaster of the Central School, Now Plymouth, and expressing his appreciation of the appointment under existing circumstances. The chairman, Messrs. -Trimble and Smith (last year’s committee for the selection of teachers), were 1 re-elected, with the addition of Mr. Dixon. \ On the motion of Messrs. Dixon and! Smith it/was arranged that the chairman. should interview the Minister of Education when in Wellington regarding the question of the rebuilding of Tawbiti and Normanby schools. Accounts amounting to £5883 9s 7d! were passed for payment. •
