SPORTING.

THE WELLINGTON CUP. Describing the Cup race, the Dominion says that Vagabond and Multicipal were the eleventh-hour-withdrawals. Nobleman retained his position of favourite, but ho was closely pressed by Red Ribbon, who carried over four figures. At the barrier Teka was on the inside, with Nobleman next, and then came Johnny Walker and Chortle) with Multiply in the middle and Red Ribbon on the outside. The start was a good one, Miss De Val and Nobleman being the first to single themselves out. At the stand Nobleman led Miss De Val, who was at the bead of a bunched field. Going out of the straight Adjutant moved up to Nobleman, and at the mile the pair were showing the way to Alteration, with the others bunched. At the five furlongs Chortle and Multiply moved up on the outside. Passing the half mile Nobleman had charge from Adjutant, with Square Deal and Johnny Walker next. Entering the straight Nobleman still led, but the positions of the others were undergoing a change. Rod Ribbon, in the middle, dashed out, hut could not reach the leader, who won by a length. Miss De Val came from a long way back and got third place, followed by Adjutant and Johnny Walker. Chortle and Teka were the last to finish. Multiply did not get a good run, and was very wide out at the turn. Adjutant and Johnny Walker both shaped well, and so did Miss De Val. who had nothing behind her at the half mile. Square Deal did not see out the distance, and Chortle, after showing plenty of pace, failed to see it out. The winner is owned by a popular Bulls sportsman, Mr. W. .1. Phillips, and is trained by J. Coyle. Tlie victory was a popular one, and the crowd gave the winner a good reception on returning to the scale.
