SENSIBLE COLLECTING BOX

FROM WANGANUI. The Department of Internal Affairs has at present on exhibition for nil who arc interested what ir. considered to bo the best form of patriotic collecting box useci in New Zealand up to date. As usual, it is the simplest in construction, easiest to carrv, and eminently “safe.” The new collecting box, which is the one adopted by the WanganuiWaitotara. Patriotic Association, is nothing more or loss than a treacle tin with an ordinary fit-in lid (with a slot hole), to which a side handle has been attached. A simple little leather flap attached to the inside of the lid is calculated to make it difficult for the contents to bo extracted. The lid, which fits tightly, is sealed on with a paper seal, which stretches right across the hd and partly down the sides of the tin, and is signed and stamped by the association. That means that the seal has to be pierced to reveal the slot. Underneath the tin is pastel the official permit to collect, with the collector’s name written in plain characters, and signed hv the chairman of the association. The advantages of the tin are that it need not be suspended laterally al 1 the time as is the case with the Wellington boxes. It mnv be carried hanging downwards, until the moment for action arrives. The Wanganui- Waitotarc Patriotic Association's rules provide that the lin shall be handled hv the one to whom it is issued and no other, that it must be handed in at a certain time to a certain place, and there opened in the presence of two or more witnesses. Tlie argument that the tin may be too small mav bo met by saving that many young ladies have found the Wet’ington boxes too big: in any case, once a tin is filled it may be ha"d<vj m, nru ] another issnedl Mr. Kinni.b lira'll, who has control of the branch of the dona itrn"nt coucmmod with patriotm eol-ie-tions, says that, he bet’Vy-'R the Wanganui (m-r is the Hast and most convenient of all the aollae+iria- b-xes he has seen in use in New- Zealand, and he is bringing it '""t"! - the notice of people interested in Wellington.
