WANGANUI BETTING CASE.

BOOKMAKERS HEAVILY FINED. PER PRESS ASSOCIATION, WANGANUI, August 8. Mr. Hewitt, S.M., after hearing evidence against Patrick Bourkc, Daniel Sullivan and John Shore, convicted them of loitering in Victoria Avenue last W anganui race meeting for the purpose of betting, and fined Bourkc £2O, Sullivan £2O, and Shore £25. The Magistrate also inflicted the penalty in the cases against Ryan Bros, and Ross. He fined William Ryan (of Auckland) £IOO, Robert Ryan (of Auckland) £SO, and David Ross (of Wellington) £75. On tho application of Mr. Cohen, who appeared for defendants, his Worship fixed the security for appeal, tho fines to be paid into court, with costs ten guineas in each case.
