NOTES FROM LONDON.
FRENCH PREMIER IN LONDON. FOB IMPORTANT CONFERENCE. ByriFelegraph—Press Assn—Copyright. Australian and N-Z. Cable Assn (Received August 8, 2.30 a.m.) LONDON, August 7. M. Ribot has arrived in London. He conferred with members of the War Cabinet and will attend an important Allied Conference to-day. COST OF HIGHER PENSIONS. FLOUR MILLERS PERTURBED. LONDON, August 6. In the House of Commons, Mr. Stanley Baldwin (Junior Lord of the Treasury) informed Mr. Rees that the cost of raising the old-age pensions would amount to from £5,500,000 to £6.000,000. . ... The milling trade in Britain is perturbed over the scheme to create one State-controlled milling company, and it is suspected that the scheme has been advanced with a view to sounding the trade prior to the nationalisation of the grain industry. The Board of Trade has refused a request for a larger importation of apples. A Birmingham correspondent reported to the Trades Council that fifteen trainloads of Chinese had been distributed amongst munition works. The unionists regard this as a menace to unionism, and threaten to strike unless they are immediately withdrawn. THE STOCKHOLM CONFERENCE. STOCKHOLM, August 7. The conference has been definitely fixed for September 9. LONDON, August 6. The Lancashire and Scottish miners’, as well as several other large unions, have declared strongly against the Stockholm Conference, and are emphatically opposed to British delegates meeting Germans. The Yorkshire miners, by a large majority, rejected the proposal for peace negotiations.
