BABY COMPETITION.
10 THE EDIIOB. Sir,—l Beo the first protest re ’the above, and. I myself think it very unfair for any public body to enter what is supposed to bo a purely parental affair. Euchre parties and dances etc., to procure funds to votes should bq barred, so as to give the poor man’s child an equal Chance, as they are the ones in the end who help the most, for although the Fire Brigade may raise a large sum, what would it he by itself supposing only they gave. Thanking you for space.—l am, etc., J DISGUSTED.
P.S.—I have just heard of a West .End child for whom general euchre parties are being set going and six more are being withdrawn. TO THE EDIIOB. Sir, —In Thursday's Herald: appears a letter in regard to the above competition. and signed “Withdrawn.” From the tone of the letter one is led to conclude that “ Withdraw!}” was out after the £4 4s in entering, and: not with the object of helping along a good cause. I have yet to learn that any condition exists in this competition that makes it imperative that only parents are eligible to work towards the object of any one particular baby winning. Any way, how did “Withdrawn” think the prizes were to be met if only a few entered and no interest was created, as, for instance, did it strike him that something like 1000 votes are required to pay the first prize, and as the competition was not got up for fun only, but to make money, it is rather nngracious on the part of ‘ Withdrawn to try and pour cold water on the undertnking.—l am, etc., conniving. jje A SPORT. TO THE EDIIOB.
Sir, In Thursday’s Herald there appears a letter signed “Withdrawn,” the purport of ■which, is to the effect that it is unfair that the Fire Brigade should have been allowed to nominate a baby as a competitor in the voting contest organised by my committee. _ I wish to deny the statement that a baby has been nominated hy the Fire Brigade. Every baby entered has been nominated hy either its father or mother, and'l am quite sure that all the parents interested are busily canvassing their friends for support for their own particular baby. If the firemen desire to support a certain baby it is manifestly impossible for the Old Girls’ Committee to prevent them from doing so.—l am, etc., E. ANDREWS, Hon. Secretary, N.P..H.5.0.G.A.
