SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
A MEETING AT OPUNAKE. On Thursday afternoon some members of the New Plymouth executive of tho School Committees’ Association — tho Rev. A. B. Chappell and Messrs. S. G. Smith, G. H. Dolby and TV. F. Short —proceeded to Opuuako to bring before committees there the desirableness of forming a local branch of the association. On the way 'down tho almost pro-historic school at Okato was inspected, and at Opunake tho school garden was visited and very favourably commented on. At the subsequent mooting tho following committeemen wore present; Messrs. J. Mildenhall, C. Malcolm, Chambers and the Revs. R. B. Tinsley and R. Welsh (Opunake). J. Young, B. Macfie, J. Fleming and R. P. Malcolm (Oaonui),. TV. S. Coombridge, J. Cox jun., and C. Warner (Mangahumc). Mr. Mildenhall was voted to the chair. After the chairman had welcomed the visitors. Mr. S. G.' Smith and the Rev. A. B. Chappell explained the advantages likely to be gained from co-operation between school committees and the necessity for establishing local branches of the association. After some discussion as to the- work possible to the association it was decided, on the motion of Mr. Chambers, seconded by Mr, Coombridge, that steps should be taken to form a local branch. Tho question of a Dominion set of school books was considered, and also tho possibility of establishing a district high school at Opunake. where parents found it impossible to give their children any form of secondary education except by sending them away to boarding schools.
