Sir Robert Stout (Chief Justice) re-, turns to Wellington to.morrow. Mr. P. C. Froeth has taken charge of the Manawatu Times, acting on behalf of a number of Palmerston citizens who have purchased the property from Mr. W. H. Smith. Mr. H. D. Vavasour retuiaied to New Zealand by the Romuera with his wife and family, after a visit to England. He arrived in Wellington from Auckland on- Tuesday, en route to his home in Blenheim. The Now Zealand Rhodes Scholar selection will bo made at Government House on December 21. The nominees are: Athol Hudson (Wellington), F. A. Airey (Auckland), Arthur Ponder (Canterbury), J. G. Anderson (Otago). Mr. Ponder is serving with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade and Mr. Hudson with tho Eighth Reinforcements. Tho inhabitants of Cambridge and district wished to make a presentation to Mr. J. H. Hammond, the manager of the Bank of New Zealand, who shortly leaves that town for New Plymouth, as a mark of esteem in which he is held in that town; but that gentleman would have none of it, stating that in tho unhappy world-wide conditions he would not accept It. An exchange states that Air. Hammond has consistently through life adopted similar methods of dealing with “presentations,” and on this occasion only “stuck to his guns.”
