BEE NOTES.

(By “Tainui.”

All beekeepers will regret to hear of tho death of G. Callaghan and join with mo in extending our sympathy to hie widowed mother and family. The season still continues its vagaries and forces us to take extra cara of our little friends. A visitor to my apiary informs me that his hives (about 40 in number) owe him about 2s each for sugar. However, ho is cheerful, and prepared to lend them, another 2s if is is required. Tho latest number of Gleanings in Bee Culture tells of the editor’s visit to Dr. Millar, and his apiary. The doctor is 84 years of ago, and one of the most successful beekeepers in U.S.A. His special lino is section honey. The worthy doctor hue dono much for tho industry; his “Stray Straws” in Gleanings are always worth reading, and ho is able to use a "sledge-hammer” or a “rnpior” on the unfortunate boo man who writes silly stuff. The doctor and his sister-in-law run an apiary of over 90 hives. Id my notes some time ago 1 suggested that honey would soon be scarce, on account of so much being exported. Two of our merchants have imormod mo that it is next to impossible to purchase any. There is‘not likely to be any new honey this side nf Christmas, even if tho weather improves. Three of onr town beekeepers have given up their bobby, and I near that our frienff the honey judge at the Winter Show has sold his property and is giving up beekeeping. A new apiary is now located at Egmont Road. This is a good neighbourbourhood. and the owner should do wall in a good season. , I received a letter lately in which the writer says that he has three men busy keeping up the food supply, and is anxiously awaiting a change of weather* for the better. Ho has over 500 hives in and .beyond Hawera. Ac this time last year be was extracting the new honey.
