PUKEKURA PARK BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING?, The monthly meeting,of tho Pukekura Park Board was bold in tho Town Hall on Tuesday evening. Present: Mr. S. Percy Smith (chairman), Messrs. W. L. Newman, H. Ford, R. C. Hughes, \V. A. Collis, and C. H. Drew (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. C. H. Burgess and TV. F. Short. CURATOR’S REPORT. The Curator (Mr. TV. TV, Smith) reported that the chief work of the board’s staff for the month had been mowing, cleaning, and burning of heaps of stuff accumulating-therefrom., Owing to the phenomenal growth of ali indigenous and introduced trees this season it had been necessary for them to do a considerable amount of trimming of trees, etc., to keep tho paths clear and open. The heavy drip from tho overhanging trees in some parts always produced a more or less pitting and i slight scouring of tho walks during ; storms of rain. Tho heavy electric and othdr storms during the first _ twelve | days of November entailed considerable work (leaning up after them, but no | damage occurred to tho board’s pro- ] perty. The fete on. behalf of wounded i soldiers held on December 2 was a gieat j success, and, notwithstanding the very , large crowd; present, there was no in- I jury whatever done to the board's pro- j perty. Ho would now earnestly draw 1 tho attention of tho board to the very I urgent necessity for immediately mowing and burning tho masses of ox-eye daisies growing on the terraces hi the sports ground. These plants and other noxious weeds were extremely plentiful and aggressive this year. They would begin to seed about tho middle of this month, and should be mown and burned immediately. Owing to the abundance of rain and mellow weather during flje spring and on to tho present time the rapid growth and vigour of tho vegetation in tho park and throughout' thy district had been, and was, very much greater than in normal seasons. Ho regretted to say that a great many roses had been stolen from the rosebed lately. Tho Secretary reported on tho financial position of the board. It was anticipated that they would hare a debit balance of about £-10 at tho end of the present financial year. The board's share of tho, gate takings at tho recent carnival was about £l6. . With reference to tho curator’s remarks concerning the- ox-cyo daisies on tho terraces of the sports ground, it was resolved that the chairman see tho chairman of the Sports Ground Committee with a view to gee-ting that body to have this weed cut and burnt. . In connection with the insinuation of electric lighting in tho park, Mr. Hughes said ho would not press the matter at present, in view of the unfavourable financial position of the hoard. The Secretary reported having had 25 notices printed embodying the bylaws relating to the park and also four notice-boards to bo placed at tho entrances to and in prominent positions in Pukekura Park. It was decided that, as tho next meeting would come during tlto holidays, it bo postponed until tho first Tuesday in February. Mr. Percy Smith was appoinTed visitor for the ensuing month. Several accounts were passed for payment.
