Sergeant Sydney Paul, writing from Lemnos on October 19 to his mother, says;—The Sixth have arrived and wo are very busy organising and getting ready to move. 1 have boon promoted to sergeant and am under Captain Weston and Lieutenant Scott, also of Now Plymouth. Ho was in tho Past and Telegraph. George Henderson is away with fover, and I near ho is going to England; also Tom Kirkby, so they are very lucky, as something is going to happen very soon. I nav'o boon pretty bad tho last fortnight and have got very thin, only weighing lOst. 91b. It is nothing serious; 1 am simply run down. I ought to have given in before, but I thought I could keep going. Captain Weston has boon very good, and also Lieutenant Scott. I have boon off this week, and have picked up well,' and soon hope to bo quite bettor again. We aro a very happy lot in tho Taranaki Company. Bob Woods, of Stratford, is sergeant-major; he is an old pal of mine and a nml good sport, and thero is no one could fill the position hotter. Ho used to work for Newton King and latterly for Will Webster. Athol M‘lsaac (son of the South Road Macs) is quartermaster, and is also a good boy; and George Bertrand, another Now Plymouth boy, is sergeant, so, wo aro a happy family. I suppose the trams aro very nearly ready, so poor old Mao will have to blow his buglo somewhere else. I don’t think they will do much harm to Dick Jury, as he has a pretty good following amongst the old people, who will prefer the cab to the car. A fellow came up to me yesterday and said he was a relation —a Cunningham from Manaia. To-day I see the doctor has sent him away ill. Major Fletcher has also gono away, but I don’t think for long; anyway I hopo not. The great auction sale of drapery, mercery, clothing, etc., still continues at 137 Devon Street (opp. Nowton King’s). Unheard-of bargains are being eagerly snapped up. No ono should miss tliis groat opportunity.
