A RETREAT FROM BAGDAD.
GREAT DISCONTENT IN AUSTRIA, ITALIAN CHAMBER SUPPORTS GOVERNMENT,
The British reverse near Bagdad is a disappointing incident, but a small force acting at such a distance from its base is always liable to meet superior forces, and tlie only course is to retreat, with as little loss as possible. The British were anxious to reach Bagdad, where German intrigues had been very active, and possibly tbe German story is true that the Arabs whom they thought friendly suddenly turned against them. Wo receive today reports of food riots in Berlin and of great discontent in Austria, where elderly men, fit or unfit, are being pressed into the army. These are cheering signs and should encourage our men to enlist, so as to strike an overwhelming blow when the time comes. The Austrian Socialist manifesto is worth little, except as the opinion of a small section. The Italians are widening their outlook on the war and there is now good hope that they will act effectively in Albania.
