FOR A GOOD CAUSE.

WORK BY THE WOMEN, SPLENDID RESULT ACHIEVED. In St. Aubyn Street, between the Grosvenor Hotel and tho Union Steam Ship Company’s office, are the rooms of tho Victoria League and tho "Women’s Patriotic Committee. Hero material is made up into comforts and necessities for the men who are upholding the honour of their country on tho rugged slopes of tho Gallipoli Peninsula. Articles aro also received here from townspeople and people “away out-back” who aro desirous of doing their little bit. The Mayoress, Mrs. O. H. Burgess, showed a Herald reporter through these buildings this afternoon. There are throe rooms in all—one tor tho Victoria League and tho other two form the town depot. The first room visited was that of tho Victoria League—that energetic band of ladies who have done so much for our men at tho front. Here were to bo seen all kinds of things. One tablo was heavily laden with articles sent in by the ladies of Mokau and Awakino. These consisted of swabs, triangular bandages, roller bandages, pyjamas, draw sheets and many other things which are necessary for the proper care of wounded men. Then there was a gift from the Pukoamhe school children of towels, etc. In one package there were no less than 100 dozen swabs. The nurses’ gift box was being packed, and in another corner of the room was a case of face cloths, feather pillows, etc., from the ladies of Ureuui. This case is to bo sent to the Malta Hospital. There wore also a largo number of writing companions and tins of Swiss milk. Many bundles of old rags for cleaning rifles were ready to be forwarded to Trenthaiu. Mrs. Burgess explained that tho league works solely for No. 1 Stationary Hospital. In tho town depot were to bo seen invalids’ nightshirts and dressing gowns. These were chiefly the work of tho Victoria League. One striking sot of articles was a number of dressing gowns made out of rugs. A rug, cut out in a certain way, was made into a newt-looking gown. Mrs. Roifo lorwarned a nice parcel of hospital necessities, and Mrs .Arden had sent m a bundle of walking sticks, for which, it will be remembered, General Monro has recently issued an appeal. Mufflers and face cloths were much in evidence. .Mrs. Burgess stated that she had received advice that face cloths wore very acceptable. In the third room were gifts for the poor Belgian people, who so bravely stemmed tho German onslaught. Gitts are always doubly welcome for this room. ... * j Mrs, Burgess said that it was hoped to get three cases away by the hospital ship next week, in addition to the jrfV4«tCs’ gift caso. Sho added that material was sent out to those people who could not provide their own material. There have never before been such complete arrangements for forwarding articles to tho front, and it is hoped that tho public will bo as generous as formerly in donations of material and kind. Anyone wishing to give anything may call at tho rooms on certain days m the week. 'At present they aro always, open on Wednesdays.
